Working Together

As part of the national Back Country Horsemen family, the Peninsula Chapter of Back Country Horsemen of Washington comprises a group of people whose primary interests are continued access to trails and teaching Leave No Trace Ethics for stock use. Peninsula Chapter members share diverse backgrounds in avocational and professional horse-related vocations. Our membership ranges in age from students to retirees; and includes ranchers, professionals, workers, veterinarians, businesspeople, and government officials.

Our unifying focus is horses and mules—riding, showing, packing, admiring, or keeping as big pets.  Many people volunteer in building and maintaining trails, while others, who don’t have time or ability to work on trails, find time to write letters and keep abreast of legislation that affects the use of stock in the public lands. Whatever the level of participation, everyone’s contribution comes through continued membership that supports the mission of BCHW and helps keep trails open for stock use.

We encourage you to join us--bring your experience and expertise--and become as involved as you wish. Not all members have horses or ride, but they are concerned about keeping trails open for all. Your membership is valued regardless of the capacity in which you choose to support our mission.

Learning Together

What We Do

*Provide opportunities to meet people who enjoy riding both front and back country trails and/or packing into the back country in Clallam County.

*Teach and practice Leave No Trace (LNT) ethics for both front and back country.

*Volunteer to build, maintain both front and back country trails, plus work with other organizations that hold dear the same purpose: Keeping Trails open for all.

*Partner with Youth groups such as Boy Scouts and 4-H, providing them with LNT educational skills, guidance and stock use skills, while working together on trails.

*Work with and receive training under direction of Public Officials from County, DNR, USFS, and Olympic National Parks.

*Use our pack stock to assist other trail groups such as Washington Trails Assoc, and Pacific NW Assoc.

*Teach minimum impact stock handling, camping with stock, trail riding training and packing techniques, leadership and trail maintenance.

*Have organized rides usually on Saturdays. After rides we gather around a campfire for good home cooking and sometimes cowboy music or poetry.
